If you’ve been working a while, how do you make a career move? There are a couple places to start.
1. If you’re doing really well in your job
If you just got a really good performance appraisal or an award for being a great employee, it’s a good time to make a career move. Good employees at one place are more attractive as hires to other places. If you are looking for an increase in salary or a higher level job, update your resume and start looking for new opportunities.
2. If the economy is strong
If the economy is strong and plenty of places are hiring, it’s a good time to make a career move. Again, if places are looking for more employees and have budgets to hire, it’s a good time to look for a higher salary or better job.
3. If you have new skills or training
If you’ve learned new skills on the job or underwent training, it can be a great time to make a career move. New employers might be looking for people with your skills and experience.
4. You just returned from vacation
If you accrue vacation at your job, don’t start looking until you have taken it. Then you can look with fresh and rested eyes, and won’t experience burn out when you’re at a new place.
5. If changes in your company that might affect you negatively
Changes at a company might impact you negatively. Say that you got along well with your supervisor, but that person has been replaced. Or maybe your job is being cut back. If those things occur, it might be better to look for greener pastures rather than staying.
6. If there’s no room for growth
Sometimes, a company may have no need of your skills or desire for growth. Say you want to move up from general laborer to a more specialized role as a packer. You might be very capable, and even have some background as a packer.
But the company you work for might have all the people it needs in that role. Your best career move, in that case, might be to look for companies who do need your skills.
